Jacksonville Chiropractic Care

What is Chiropractic?

Most people know chiropractic care is outstanding in the treatment of back pain, neck pain and headaches. A discussion with Jacksonville chiropractic physician will provide a greater understanding of other aspects of chiropractic care you may not know.

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts, and as a health-care discipline is based on the premise that good health care depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system. When body structures such as cells and organs are functioning normally, a state of health or normal physiology exists. However, when the body’s physiology is abnormal the potential for a disease state exists. Thus, we begin to understand that abnormal physiology and function predispose the body to disease processes.

The spinal cord has 31 pairs of spinal nerves which exit from the spinal column. The most delicate and important organs of the nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) are encased in hard bony coverings composed of the skull and vertebrae. The spine provides protection, mobility, and weight bearing sport for our upright position. The spine offers protection to the delicate spinal nerves which exit from the spinal column. Irritation to the spinal nerves can occur when spinal biomechanics are compromised and not functioning properly.

“It is the body that is the hero, not science, not antibiotics…not machines or new devices…The task of the physician today is what it has always been, to help the body do what it has learned so well to do on its own during its unending strugglefor survival – to heal itself. It is the body, not the medicine, that is the hero.”

Former Assistant Professor of Pediatrics University of Minnesota

What Does Your Jacksonville Chiropractic Physician Do?

Most doctors use a standard procedure of examination to diagnose a patient’s condition. Your doctor of chiropractic also uses time honored methods of consultation, case history, physical examination, and when indicated, X-rays or other modern imaging tests or laboratory analysis to arrive at a diagnosis. In addition, he provides a careful chiropractic structural examination, with special emphasis on the spine, extremities, nervous and musculoskeletal system.
The examination of your spine, nerve and muscle systems to evaluate structure and function is what makes the chiropractic approach different from that of other health care practitioners.

Chiropractic Jacksonville: Your spine’s complexity

Your spinal column is a series of movable bones which begin at the base of your skull and end at your hips. Although the spine is composed of 24 individual vertebrae, it functions as one dynamic structure upon which the total body skeleton is dependent for support and movement. There are seven cervical (neck) vertebrae, twelve thoracic (middle back) vertebrae, and five lumbar (lower back) vertebrae. These vertebrae are stacked up like building blocks, with discs (shock absorbers) between them. These discs help to cushion shock, reduce friction, bind the vertebrae together and allow movement to occur more easily.

Accidents, falls, stress, tension, overexertion or other factors may not allow the spine to move properly within its normal range of motion. This can result in minor displacements or derangements of one or more of these vertebrae, causing irritation to spinal nerve roots directly by pressure or indirectly through reflexes.
These irritations, in turn, may cause malfunctions in your body. Many chiropractors believe that nerve pressure, or nerve reflex changes, can cause a distrubance to delicate body functions resulting in an increased susceptibility to disease processes. Many chiropractors hypothesize that spinal subluxation can cause improper function of organs leading to increased susceptibility to infection or chronic disease.

Thirty-one pair of spinal nerves extend down the spine from the brain and exit through a series of openings between the vertebrae. The nerves leave the spine and form a very complicated network which ultimately influences every living tissue in your body.

A Skilled Practitioner is Key To Successful Pain Relief

In an April 3 article by the American Psychological Association, success of chiropractic treatment is dependent on skillful practitioners. Therapy in the hands of a proven successful chiropractor is shown to be more effective.

Overall, there are several nonpharmacologic options available to patients, demonstrating a similar effectiveness for the treatment of chronic low back pain. Which treatment is “best” for any one patient will depend on the patient’s preferences, insurance coverage, convenience, and the availability of skillful practitioners of the given therapy. While these therapies may not replace the pain pill, there is evidence of at least a moderately beneficial role in the treatment of chronic pain.

The Question of Chiropractic Care: Can Design and Science Coexist?

Early in the history of chiropractic care the idea that we are creatures of design was popular. Human beings were made in the image of God or were specifically designed to live in a certain type of environment. Until the early 1900s most practitioners in medical fields operated under this same premise. They were trying to restore the body to some level or place closer to original design by treating and alleviating disease, pain, illness and symptoms of illness. The philosophy of a master design and the designed creation pervaded society so that the premise of chiropractic care did not seem unusual or surprising. However, early in the 20th century, a new philosophy of science had already begun to pervade the medical profession- one not without its flaws. The idea that order somehow arose out of chaos began to replace the idea that nature is a product of design. The mutual exclusion of these two philosophies is evident today in discussions and disagreements at every level of society. Darwin’s theory of evolution was the basis of this contention. Subsequent to the publication and popularization of his theory, over time, observations about process and natural selection were synthesized with a much less provable thesis- the philosophical premise of naturalism. This philosophy of naturalism is well expressed by the famous words of Carl Sagan, “The cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be.”, meaning that there is no such thing as design because there is no such thing as a designer or creator.

The best Chiropractors in Jacksonville – at Atlantic Coast Medical Care.

The extent to which the western medical community rejected chiropractic and all other alternative medical fields was based on the embracing of the philosophy of naturalism. Every diagnosis and treatment option was to be based exclusively and purely on observation and accumulation of empirical data, while alternate approaches to medical care based on any other philosophy was rejected as unscientific. At the onset of this approach, chiropractic care was soundly refuted by the medical establishment but over time, their own core tenet came back to disrupt and finally end their categorical rejection of alternative forms of medicine.

The alternative treatments were working.

Empirical data accumulated and successes in chiropractic care were documented until finally, the AMA lost an antitrust suit in Wilk v. American Medical Association, ending a long standing boycott by the AMA of chiropractic care. As evidence of the efficacy of chiropractic methods mounted, forced by their own principles of evidence based medicine (EBM), many medical organizations and insurance companies embraced chiropractic care as a viable means of treatment for back injuries and pain.

What A Pain in the Neck! Diagnosing and Treating Neck Pain

Jacksonville Chiropractors

Some things just don’t go away by themselves. A literal pain in the neck can be is difficult to get rid of as the figurative kind. Everything from old injuries to the way that you sit and work today, can contribute to neck pain. Some causes are avoidable, like poor posture and sitting incorrectly. Training yourself to avoid these can bring about fairly quick relief of pain caused by bad technique. Other causes of neck pain such as injuries and accidents may be far less avoidable.

Treating Your Neck Pain at Jacksonville’s Atlantic Coast Medical Center & Chiropractic Care :: neck pain treatment

Identifying The Cause

To treat neck pain, the first step is to determine what has and is causing the neck pain. Once the causes and contributing factors are identified, a successful treatment plan can be structured to eliminate pain and achieve the goals of the patient.

Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain can be caused by many factors. Neck pain can result from acute injuries which cannot be avoided, such as an automobile accident resulting in a whiplash-type injury. Neck pain can also be caused by use of “bad” or improper habits and techniques, such as poor posture and improper lifting. Neck pain is caused by the majority of these habits and can be effectively treated once the causes are identified and the appropriate measures to avoid these “bad” and improper habits and techniques are implemented.

Some of the more common causes of neck pain include:

  • incomplete rehabilitation of past injuries can cause neck pain
  • neck pain is caused by lack of proper and periodic spinal alignments
  • presence of cervical spine subluxations causes neck pain
  • poor posture and prolonged sitting cause neck pain
  • excessive repetitive neck motions causes neck pain

The Treatment

  • Spinal Adjustments: The adjustment is a safe, natural, noninvasive procedure used by the chiropractor to restore and improve health. Learning the art of adjusting is a skill that requires years of study and practice. Chiropractic doctors are the only health care professionals trained to deliver the chiropractic adjustment. Spinal adjustments by any other individual or health care professional have been shown to be dangerous and less effective.
  • VAX-D Spinal Decompression: VAX-D Spinal Decompression is able to relieve pain by decompressing the discs in your cervical spine. The VAX-D Treatment distracts the cervical region of the spine, taking the pressure off the discs and spinal nerves, and allows the back to heal itself.
  • Trigger Point Therapy: Pressure is applied to small, precise areas of pain, called trigger points. This relieves “knots” in your muscles, helping to reduce pain.
  • Traction: A sling around your chin gently releases pressure on joints and nerves. A rolled-up towel under your neck helps restore your neck’s curve.
  • Electrical Stimulation: Electrical impulses cause muscles to contract gently and automatically. They may relax muscles, reduce swelling, and improve circulation.
  • Ice and Heat: Your chiropractic physician may apply ice to your neck after an injury to help reduce swelling. Moist heat relaxes muscles when swelling is not present.
  • Cervical Collar: A stiff collar immobilizes your neck. This technique is used only for pain relief or to support your neck when you cannot hold up your head.
  • Ultrasound: Painless sound waves reduce pain and swelling in joints and muscles. Ultrasound helps prevent scarring and may also improve circulation.
